We took our RISE Math assessment. Many finished, but there are a few left. ELA We worked on researching our life cycle reports. We split a notebook page into fourths and labeled them birth, growth, reproduction, and death, or life expectancy. Then we wrote down facts in each of the squares. Finally, we started writing our reports and drawing our pictures that went with them. Comprehension: We continued reading an article in our Wonders book about Whooping cranes. Science and Social Studies Today we finished the school Panorama survey. The kids actually totally loved it and wanted to do more! We also finished planting bean seeds in bags. We also went to music and worked on keeping a steady beat and maintaining rhythm by having a drum circle. It was a great activity after testing!

We took our RISE Math assessment. ELA We each chose an animal for which to research the life cycle. We split a notebook page into fourths and labeled them birth, growth, reproduction, and death, or life expectancy. Then we wrote down facts in each of the squares. Finally, we started writing our reports. Comprehension: We continued reading an article in our Wonders book about Whooping cranes. Science This week we are learning about life cycles. Today we started learning about plant life cycles. The slideshow I used is in your Google classroom under science. It's called Plant Life Cycles. We got done with slide 12. We also started planting bean seeds in bags. We didn't all finish, and will work on them more in the morning. 5/2/2024

Main Lesson Today we reviewed the standards we've learned by working through practice questions on RISE. This way the kids will know how to use the tools available. We're all ready for RISE to end. ELA We took our RISE Language Arts assessment. Comprehension: We started an article in our Wonders book about Whooping cranes. We only read 2 pages. Science This week we are learning about life cycles. Today we took the notes from yesterday and started making a model of the butterfly's life cycle. We used pasta. It looked like this when we were done. I found a website that shows how to do the project. The difference is that we used the words of the life cycle, including birth, growth, metamorphosis, in addition to the words that are on the model here. We didn't include death in this model. I can give you the pasta tomorrow at school. 5/1/2024

Main Lesson Today we corrected our math homework and got new homework. We also worked on defending our 1st place position in Prodigy by doing math review questions online. Science This week we are learning about life cycles. Today we reviewed animal and plant life cycles. We talked about birth, growth, reproducing, and death. ' Today we started our first project by doing slides 14 and 15. First we researched by watching the video and reading the text. Then instead of using the chart on slide 15, we used our notebooks to write lots of details about each stage of the butterfly's life cycle. We went on a field trip to Cross E Ranch. 4/30/2024

Main Lesson Today we reviewed the standards we've learned by playing a game called Hit The Jackpot! We worked in groups to solve math problems and win fake money! We didn't finish but will finish tomorrow. We also are joining in a Prodigy competition around the state to see which classroom can do the most correct problems. In about 20 minutes our class went from 10th place to 1st place and got over 300 problems from the Math Standards correct! ELA We took our RISE Language Arts assessment. Comprehension: We read an article about why there shouldn't be class pets and identify what strategies the author used to make their argument. (There were some strong feelings disagreeing with the author.) :) Science This week we are learning about life cycles. Today we discussed both animal and plant life cycles. We talked about birth, growth, reproducing, and death. After death, in nature, the body decomposes and goes back into the earth to help more plants. It's recycled naturally. We discussed the fact that only living things go through this cycle. This doesn't happen to rocks because they're not alive. Log on to Google with your username and password. Click on the waffle and then Google Classroom. Go to Classwork, and Science. Finally, click on Life Cycles. We got through slide 13 today. 4/25/2024

Small Groups: 1. We did x-tra math. Go to Clever and log in with your student ID [email protected] . The password is the same password you use at school. X-tra math is on your teacher page. 2. We did i-ready for 15 minutes.. Go to Clever and log in with your student ID [email protected] . The password is the same password you use at school. 3. We reviewed what we've learned so far in math with A.M. work. Main Lesson Today we took a math test on combined partitioning shapes and equivalent fractions. You can get to it by logging on to Google and going to google classroom. It's under math. ELA Phonics: We're working on compound words. Here's the new set of words. words cover Comprehension: We learned the new vocabulary words: energy, natural, pollution, produce, renewable, replace, sources, and traditional. We then read the passage "Here Comes Solar Power," from our Little Joe book. We discussed the text features: Table of Contents, Headings, Sidebar, and Captions in the article. Grammar and Writing: We practiced our grammar in morning work. We practiced building sentences. We worked phonological awareness. We had a make-up day finishing our cursive. Fluency: We practiced our Reader's Theater scripts. Science This week we are celebrating Earth Day. We're investigating Social Studies Standard 1: Objectives: 2b: Identify important natural resources of world ecosystems. 2c. Describe how communities have modified the environment to accommodate their needs (e.g. logging, storing water, building transportation systems). 3a: Identify ways people use the physical environment (e.g. agriculture, recreation, energy, industry). 3b. Compare changes in the availability and use of natural resources over time. 3c. Describe ways to conserve and protect natural resources (e.g. reduce, reuse, recycle). 3d. Compare perspectives of various communities toward the natural environment. 3e. Make inferences about the positive and negative impacts of human-caused change to the physical environment. Today we talked about where our garbage goes. I used this slideshow with videos. We talked about the idea that our planet needs upstanders just like people do. We can reduce, reuse, and recycle, and encourage other people to do that too. We learned this song. I introduced them to two upstanders for the planet. One of them is John Muir. Here's the book I read. The illustrations are beautiful. Another group of people who are working hard to be upstanders for the environment are the Native Americans. This story tells of when the owners of the oil pipeline wanted to put it across their land, and they said no, because the pipelines always end up leaking and causing pollution. They fought for a long time to keep the pipeline off of their land. Here's the book. It's called The Water Protectors. This book won the Caldecott award and also has gorgeous illustrations. 4/24/2024

We're working on compound words. Here's the new set of words. words cover Comprehension: We took a quiz where we needed to read two stories written by the same author about the same characters and compare and contrast them. Grammar and Writing: We practiced our grammar in morning work. We practiced building sentences. We worked phonological awareness. We learned how to write capital Z's. Fluency: We practiced our Reader's Theater scripts. Science This week we are celebrating Earth Day. Compare perspectives of various communities toward the natural environment. 3e. Make inferences about the positive and negative impacts of human-caused change to the physical environment. Today we talked about things we can do to help preserve our natural resources, including reducing the amount we use, reusing what we have, and recycling what we have to turn it into something else. There are people that say that children are too small to make a difference, but that's just not true, and you'll see how much of a difference you can make in this lesson! I used this slideshow with videos. We calculated that if a kid used 3 plastic water bottles a day for a month, they'd use 90 water bottles. By using a reusable one, they're really helping save a lot! If you think of our whole class using a reusable water bottle, that would save 3,150 water bottles in just one month! We also talked about using clothes that were used before, by someone else sometimes instead of always buying new, which saves water, bees, fish, birds. . . because of the pesticides. We discussed only washing our clothes when they're dirty, instead of washing them just after trying them on for a minute or something. There are some things we always wash of course, like our underwear! :) We'll discuss other ways of Reducing, reusing, and recycling tomorrow, as well as ways that communities have done this! 4/23/2024

Today we finished watching the video from yesterday. we watched a video, pausing every few minutes to discuss. We also watched this video about how fossil fuels are made, and why they are nonrenewable. Then we played a game to model renewable and nonrenewable resources. We put 100 chips into a bag. 80 of them were different colors and 20 of them were yellow. That bag is a model of the earth's resources. Then we took turns drawing out 10 chips each year. Each time a nonrenewable (colored) chip was pulled out, it had to stay out, because we can't make more. Each time a renewable resource was used(yellow) we got to put it back in. As the years went on, and everyone was pulling out 10 chips, more and more yellow chips were pulled out and fewer and fewer colored chips were left in the bag. We only got to year 12, but we're going to up to year 20 tomorrow. Here are materials to play the game if you'd like to play at home. It's suggested that you use beads. You could even use macaroni and color 10 of the macaroni a different color to be the renewable ones! I only use one bag, and I cross out the last 2 columns of the chart, so we're only tracking the number of renewable and nonrenewable resources drawn out, or used each year. 4/22/2024

Today we brainstormed all of the things we could think of that the Earth gives us that we use. We came up with plants, water, sun, soil, minerals, wind, and fossil fuels. These things are called Natural Resources. We wrote that as the title in our notebook. Then we wrote down all of the ways we could think of that we used those natural resources. There were so many ways that it almost filled up a page!! We even ran out of space. Then we watched a video, pausing every few minutes to discuss. We only got to minute 6. I promise that the lesson doesn't stop here, and I'm not teaching you this so we can feel sad about using up our resources! We'll go on to learn and discuss ways that we can use our natural resources and take care of our earth at the same time. We'll talk about using renewable resources, and come up with things that kids, and adults can do to make a difference, since we only have one planet, and it gives us SO much! 4/18/2024

We reviewed what we've learned so far in math with A.M. work. Main Lesson Today we learned that you can have the same area and many different perimeters, and the same perimeter and many different areas. We got 24 foam squares (you could use cheez-its or wheat thins) and made as many different arrays as we could with the same area We counted the perimeter of all of them. Then we made irregular shapes with them and counted the perimeters. After that, we made as many shapes as we could with the perimeter of 18. The most we found was 6. For homework we are doing page 731-732 odd numbers, and page 725-726 even numbers. To get to your math book online, go to Clever and log in with your student ID [email protected] . The password is the same password you use at school. Click on the little cube that says I-ready. This link has great instructions on how to use the bookshelf from home. ELA Phonics: Today we learned about the consonant le pattern. MOST words that end in the consonant l sound end with le. If the first syllable is closed, the middle consonant is doubled before the le. Our packet for the week is: cover words Grammar and Writing: We practiced our grammar in morning work. We practiced building sentences. Science We cut up a giant aloe vera leaf and rubbed the inside on our skin. We were amazed at how soft it made it! We started watching Bill Nye talk about the desert. and took notes. We had an earthquake drill. We went to the library. |
