We also worked on writing sentences. We're working on learning about reference materials this week. Fluency: Everyone got our new parts for Christmas Reader's Theater. We practiced our parts. Spelling and Phonics: We took a spelling test today. Comprehension: We read about Israel on Culturegrams and filled in our Travel journals. To get to Culturegrams, go to this site. You will need to log in, and I"m not allowed to post the username and password, so check class Dojo. After you're logged in, Click on Elementary. It's orange. Then click the first box called Culturegrams. Finally, Click "Kids Edition." You're in! Now we're studying Israel, so click on Asia, then Israel. All of the answers to learning about culture are on this page. In class we researched it all together. At home it'll help if you do this with an adult helping you. Make sure you're using the sidebar to find information. There's a lot in there! We also finished reading, "Next Stop America," in our Wonders books and practiced comparing and contrasting both this expository text and the text, "Castle on Hester Street." Writing: We started writing the middle of our stories. We also prewrote using a Venn diagram and wrote a paragraph to compare and contrast Next Stop America and Castle on Hester Street. We finished "How to Train Your Dragon." today! Social Studies: We read about Israel on Culturegrams and finished filling in our Travel Journals together. Then they filled out this page to show me know what they've learned. They're allowed to use their travel journals to answer the questions. Tomorrow we put our stamps in our passports and travel to Mexico!! Writing: We started prewriting for the middle of our stories, learning about how changing speed can change emotion. Social Studies: We had a lesson about respecting other cultures and people who are different than us. Here's the video we watched to spark discussion. We talked about the fact that people came here to the US so they could have religious freedom, and that the Jewish people didn't have religious freedom either. We discussed the fact that we can be friends with people who have different cultures than us, and that we can totally keep our own customs and traditions while being friends with people who are different. We discussed that it's totally OK to ask about customs and traditions, but not OK to make fun of them or leave people out because of them. We decided there's a difference between saying, "That's interesting," and saying, "That's so weird." There's also a difference on our faces when we're being respectful, and we all hope others will respect us and our customs and traditions too. We played the dreidel game, danced a bit of the Hora, and learned about Judah and the Maccabees defeating Antiochus and the miracle of the oil. We filled in our travel journals. These included the character, setting, problem, and solution. Comprehension: We acted out how we could show our feelings just by our feet. Illustrators could also do this. Then we did an art project that would go with our elf stories. We made elf legs that showed expression! Social Studies: We used our Social Studies time to work on our art projects. Social Studies: We took manila folders and used crayons and markers to turn them into suitcases so we could begin our trip around the world soon! They can access it from here. ELA Grammar: We practiced what we had already learned in our morning work. We also worked on writing sentences. We're working on the prefixes il, im, ir, and in this week. Writing: We worked on cursive letter e. Fluency: They are working on their Reader's theater scripts for Thanksgiving. Comprehension: We read the story Sailing to America and related the story to illustrations and how the contribute to the story's character, setting, and mood. Phonics: We sorted g words into hard and soft g's. Social Studies: We got out the inflatable globes and found the equator, the prime meridian, and the 7 continents. We'll finish this lesson tomorrow. We also went to PE and painted Christmas ornaments.
