Then click on the waffle in the corner and find Google Classroom. Click on Classwork, and then math. Your fractions test is right there. ELA Spelling and Phonics: We learned about the vowel teams oi and oy. oi usually comes in the middle of words and oy usually comes at the ends. Comprehension: We practiced being able to determine the different expository text structures by reading paragraphs about exotic pets and answered comprehension questions about the paragraphs. Grammar and Writing: We reviewed what we've learned so far in grammar during morning work We practiced writing complete sentences. Science: We're learning about 3.2.2 inherited traits. We're starting with learning about inherited traits in dogs. Today we listed the traits of a mom dog and a dad dog. Then we mixed all of those traits up six different times to come up with six different possible puppies. We also talked about how some breeds had their ears taped up when they were puppies so they'd stick up for the rest of their lives. That made them look more fierce, which was helpful for some jobs. Other dogs had their tails docked when they were teeny tiny puppies so they wouldn't get bitten off by prey or get hurt on things later when they were working. They did it when they were so tiny they didn't remember the surgery when they were older. Now that there are many of those dogs not doing their original jobs, many people think they shouldn't have their ears and tails cropped, taped, and docked anymore, Others are so used to how they looked in generations past that they don't want to change that look. BUT they still inherit the trait of long tails and floppy ears. Here's the worksheet we used.

I also brought Oakley to show that you could see that he inherited traits of his duck hunter ancestors. 1. He has webbed feet. 2. Water just falls right off of his hair unless you really work to get it down in there. That would help a duck retriever go through wetlands. 3. He loves to swim 4. He loves to retrieve and will play for hours and hours. He'll also bring the ball right back to my hand. 5. He has good long distance eyesight. Dogs with long noses usually do. Tomorrow we'll start research on 2 breeds of our choosing and we'll fill in the chart to see what the people so long ago selected them for, and how they are the way they are now because of it. 1/26/2024

Usually it sounds like long e, sometimes it sounds like short e, and rarely it sounds like long a. We made a chart in our notebooks and divided the list B words into 3 columns, one for each sound. Then we highlighted the ea team. We had a chance to predict what we thought would happen each time a new generation started. We also discussed the fact that it wasn't as simple as Kip just deciding to call the wolf dog. It took many many years of friendly helpful dogs having puppies who were even more friendly and helpful than they were! Slide 5: Look at each picture carefully. Can you tell what the dog is doing in each picture? These are thousands of years old. They prove something. Finish the sentence in red. Slide 6: The top middle dog is a terrier. People chose them to live with because they enjoyed hunting and killing little rodents that got in their grain and food. If you had a good terrier, then your food was safe from mice and rats! And just think. . . if you had a really good terrier, and your neighbor had a really good terrier, and your dogs were getting old, would you want them to have puppies so you could have another great rodent catcher? Probably! The second one on the top right is an indigenous woman with her dog that pulls a travois, which is a sled. When they traveled to find food, the dog would pull important things so the humans didn't have to! Babies could be wrapped up in soft blankets and travel that way, or the dog could pull the tipi, or food. The dog on the bottom left has webbed feet and super thick fur. It is really really good at swimming, and they will swim out into the ocean to save people's lives who are drowning. It could bring you back to shore. The dog in the middle is working with a hunter. That dog will watch where the hunter shoots a bird, then point it out, run out to where it is, and bring it back, all without chewing up or eating the bird. That's amazing right? The last picture has two dogs who are pulling a milk cart! These dogs LOVE pulling carts! And their people depend on them to help them move their milk around town. Slide 7: Have you ever done any of these things with a dog? Slide 8: How about this? Don't answer this question yet, but spend tonight thinking about it. We'll answer it tomorrow. 1/22/2024

Main Lesson We continued interviewing people to find out their opinions and filling out our tally charts so that we had at least 70 votes. On Friday we used our skip counts to decide what scale would work best along the bottom of our blank graphs. Then we labeled them and filled in a bar for each choice to make a bar graph. Here's an example: ELA Spelling and Phonics: We are practicing adding the suffixes ful and -ous to words. We made a page in our notebooks and wrote the root words, then added the suffix to them. Words Cover Comprehension: We combined comprehension with Social Studies. See below. Grammar: We corrected last week's quiz We reviewed what we've learned so far in grammar during morning work We practiced writing complete sentences. Social Studies: We continued reading this article from Wonderopolis about Why State Borders Are the Way They Are. (I fixed that link!) These states' borders were determined using latitude and longitude. Use green to color their borders. Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota each cover about 3 degrees of latitude, making them about 207 miles, north to south. Colorado, Wyoming and Montana each have about 4 degrees of latitude, or about 276 miles. Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Wyoming, North Dakota and South Dakota have about 7 degrees of longitude, equal to about 483 miles wide. January 17th, 2024

Then we started interviewing people to find out their opinions and filling out our tally charts. Homework is to gather data by asking people the question we're going to graph. If you weren't here, you'll need to think of a question you'd like to ask people about, like "What is your favorite type of pizza?" And think of 4 choices. Use tally marks to keep track of the votes. You'll need to log on to Google, then click on the waffle and click on Google Classroom. The pretest will be in math. 2. Lesson 19, Session 2-3 Instead of following the math book, we had a graphing party. We put about 20 graphs around the room and rotated around, doing each graph. We did everything from "How many times can you write your name in one minute?" to "What is your favorite color?" Some were picture graphs and some were bar graphs. Many had scales that didn't count by 1's. When we were done we looked at the data and answered questions about the graphs. If you weren't here, you'll need to use the book's data to learn the same stuff. This link has great instructions on how to use the bookshelf from home. Print off the lesson on lesson 19 sessions 2-3 from the workbook. For homework we ripped out the last page of both lessons. We did the odd numbers in class and will do the even numbers for homework. ELA Spelling and Phonics: We took a spelling test on the aw and au spellings. cover words Comprehension: We combined comprehension with Social Studies. See below. Speaking and Listening: Students finished giving their presentations Grammar: We corrected last week's quiz We reviewed what we've learned so far in grammar during morning work We practiced writing complete sentences. Social Studies: We started reading this article from Wonderopolis about Why State Borders Are the Way They Are. We colored the borders that were wavy blue, since they were decided by where rivers are. We wondered what would happen over time as a river changes shape. Would a state change shape too? Could one state get bigger and another get smaller? Misc We changed jobs and cleaned our desks. Boy did they need it!
