We did iready for 15 minutes, and fluency flight. Go to Clever and log in with your student ID [email protected] . The password is the same password you use at school. Find I-ready and click on fluency flight, then My Path. 3. We reviewed what we've already learned in our math morning work. Main Lesson We learned about counting squares to find the area of a shape. First we all started with 8 wheat thins. We made a rectangle and talked about how it looks like an array. It IS an array! Johnny realized that we could count up the sides and multiply them. We talked about the fact that it's the same with the area. The side going up is called the length, and the side going across is called the width. The formula, which is like the recipe, to find area, is lxw=a, or length x width = area. We ate a Wheat thin and made another shape. This time the formula didn't work so we had to count squares. We kept eating and making different shapes out of our squares, then finding the area by counting. This is lesson 14 session 2 in our book. Here's a video that teaches it. To get to the page, go to Clever and log in with your student ID [email protected] . The password is the same password you use at school. Find I-ready and click on bookshelf. This link has great instructions on how to use the bookshelf from home. Print off the lesson on lesson 14 session 2 from the workbook. Homework is page 309-310. They went to library today. ELA Grammar: We practiced what we had already learned in our morning work. We also worked on writing sentences. We're working on literal and nonliteral language this week. Writing: We worked on typing. Fluency: They are working on their Reader's theater scripts for Thanksgiving. Social Studies: We reviewed what we learned about government and did some redos on our Government tests. We also learned about why all flat maps are totally wrong. We looked at the globe and thought about how we'd cut it and make it flat. We imagined printing the globe onto our hands and making our hands into a hollow ball shape. Then we noticed how our thumbs are touching. Maybe that's Utah. Our fingernails are like the north pole, touching each other on the top. Then we separated our hands at the thumbs and rolled them back so the pinkies are touching but our hands were still in cupping shapes. If that was the globe, the North Pole would be totally broken, and half of Utah would be on one side of the map and the other half would be on the other side! Then we straightened out our fingers. wow! Our globe would be really messed up now! After that adventure, we watched this video. Then, to see how the map we usually use is warped and distorted, we watched this. We also discussed what's happening in our brains when we lose our tempers, and what to do about it, like noticing that our hands clench, face gets red, stomachs get tight, jaws clench, we feel hot, and our hearts pound. When we feel that happening, we know that our amygdala is preparing for a flip out. We can walk away, take deep breaths, and find an adult. There are other things we can do too that we'll talk about. Songs we'll be practicing this week are: Mamacita, Donde Esta Santa Claus Oh Hannukkah States of the United States Song 50 Nifty United States 7 Continents Song Oceans Song I'm reading to them from How to Train Your Dragon.

ELA Comprehension: We learned about how illustrations help us understand the mood of the story. I used this powerpoint to teach. There's not really a script. But the basic idea is to look at the illustration including the colors and figure out what it's telling us about the mood of the character and the setting, then do the same with text and put the information from both together. Spelling and phonics We started talking about soft c and g rules. They learned the words to the song: When c is followed by e, i or y, the C says /s/ like city. Circus and face, cycle and race, The c says /s/ like city. When g is followed by e i or y the G says /j/ like genius Gigi and ledge, gymnastics and edge The G says /j/ like ge Grammar: We practiced what we had already learned in our morning work. We asked and answered both thick and thin questions about the story. We went over our Main idea from the other day and started figuring out the main idea in paragraphs. We read a paragraph called Cooper's Gate and identified the main idea and supporting details. We wrote them on a hand. We left out details that weren't important. Here's a video that explains the concept. Then we read the Friday Night Lights paragraph and did the same thing. This time we took a grade on it. Grammar: We're learning that the suffixes ful and -ous mean "full of," as well as reviewing the previous skills taught in our morning work. We're working on irregular plurals. We are also writing poems about Veterans. Most of us finished our final copies. We also worked on typing. Social Studies: We read the book Grace For President. We talked about the following words: democracy: When people get to choose who their leaders are candidate: a person who wants to be a leader constituents: The people who vote campaign: Making posters, giving speeches, meeting people, making friends, working hard to get people to vote for you parties: groups of people who think and usually vote the same way Electoral College: Each state gets a certain number of votes depending on how many people live there and how big the state is. There are 538 votes total. We divided that in half, which is 269. Sooooo. . . if one candidate gets 270 votes, they're the winner. We discussed the following questions: After discussing what a democracy is, can it really be a democratic vote if there's only one person to vote for? Who is working harder? Who is a better listener? Who would you trust to make important decisions for you? Girls, what if it was a boy who was working harder and making great decisions? Would you vote for him? Wyoming only has 3 votes!! Most people think it won't really make a difference! Why was it so important in this case? When finished, we defined a lot of the words on this page and decided which we would want in our government leaders. It says President, but this could be for anyone we voted for. We spent a lot of time defining the words, then we circled our top ten. It was SO hard to decide! When we finished, we highlighted the top three. Tomorrow we'll write a quick paragraph about the words we chose. Grammar: We're learning about how to capitalize titles, as well as reviewing the previous skills taught in our morning work. Sentences Writing: We learned about editing our Dia de Los Muertos writing, worked on finishing our sloppy copies, and revising and editing them. Comprehension: We did our first activity to start learning about Main Idea and details. There were 12 bags around the room, each with related items in them, for example, one had a Chewbacca hat, a Revenge of the Sith movie, and a Star Wars tag. They had to write the 3 items and then decide the "main idea" between the 3 items. Then they had to determine what the item was that helped them decide the most and why. They worked in partners and rotated from bag to bag. We'll go from concrete objects to text soon. We also worked on typing. Science: The White Table: I read to them the story called America's White Table. We discussed the meaning of symbolism, and how the items on the table are symbols and why they fit. We also discussed how we will set up a white table on Friday in the lunchroom. If any families would like to contribute items to the table, I'll send out a sign-up-genius this afternoon. This link has great instructions on how to use the bookshelf from home. Print off the lesson on lesson 9 session 3 from the workbook. Homework is page 223-224. ELA: We worked on our Dia de Los Muertos writing, finishing our sloppy copies and revising. We also learned about capitalizing titles in books. Here's a video that explains it. We wrote the rules down in our ELA notebooks. Science/Social Studies: We learned about Veteran's Day. 1. I read the book, Veterans: Heroes In Our Neighborhood to them. We discussed many of the concepts in the book. 2. We watched this quick video and discussed it. 3. Then we watched this video. We paused it a lot to discussed what was happening. At the end we talked about how the grandsons learned how important it is to remember and how grateful we are for our veterans. 4. We discussed interviewing a veteran. We talked about how usually people don't want to do violent things, so it often makes them sad to think about it, and when we interview people we don't want to make them sad because that would be really disrespectful and really mean. We don't want to do that at all. Instead we can interview them with questions that will help them feel proud of serving their country and protecting freedoms. No one HAS to interview a veteran, but if you do know a veteran, and they would like to be interviewed, go ahead and do it! Here's the paper we're going to use. |
The Plan. . .My plan is to list what we did each day and the homework for each night on this page. That way you can just click on the date to see the day's entry. I will do my very best to update this daily! Archives
