I made the mistake of thinking Constitution Day was on the 27th instead of the 17th, so they got the lesson today. First we read about it in our reading book. The story is called, "A Plan For The People." We stopped and discussed many things while reading such as: 1. The photo and who was in it 2. Headings, pictures and captions, as well as a bar graph tells us this is expository and not narrative. p. 169 Every state wanted their own things, so every delegate had different opinions about what was most important, depending on what their own state really needed. They wore wigs, shirts with vests, and then coats, along with breeches and tight socks back then! They were HOT! Then add the bugs, and ugh! p.170 These people had just fought to be separate from England. They did NOT want a king or Queen bossing them around! They didn't want just one person making the laws. Instead they all wanted to share being in charge together. That's really important in our country. When people vote to pick their leaders, and those leaders run the government for the people, that's called a democracy. We'll study the Bill of Rights more in November. Back then only white men who owned a house could vote because they thought that only they were wise enough to make big decisions like that. Think of all of the people that left out. BUT they were one of the first countries to even do that! Since then, we've added things to the constitution to allow EVERYONE who is an American citizen and over 18 to vote. Lots of people fought for those rights. Many other countries thought the founding fathers were crazy to let the people decide who their leaders would be, and this idea of a democracy where the people ran their own government would fail. but it didn't! We still use it today. We then watched this video also pausing to discuss it several times. And to introduce them to the wording in a 3rd grade way. . . schoolhouse rock. Language Reading; Our Hooway For Wodney Wat group performed and recorded their script. It's on the home page if you'd like to listen! Spelling/Phonics: We reviewed the schwa sound. Any letter can make that sound. It's the most common vowel sound in English, and it's almost always in the unaccented syllable. We checked the work that we did last week and turned it in. Writing: We discussed writing our rough drafts/sloppy copies. We added more details to each section of our plans and wrote them into sentences on lined paper. Handwriting: We reviewed all of our clock climbers: a, c, d, g, q. Science 1. We learned about the water cycle and acted it out as if we were water molecules. We didn't watch this video, but this explains it well. 2. We discussed the importance of knowing the wind direction. If a giant storm cloud is right next to you, but the wind is going away from you, then you won't have any precipitation. We check wind direction with a weather/wind vane. Bring up this slideshow and go to slide 11. Watch both videos. We got to the part where we made the arrow, but we haven't stuck it on a pencil yet. Language Reading; We practiced our reader's theater scripts. They're just about ready to perform! Spelling/Phonics: A few of us finished taking our pretests, and I handed out our new spelling packet. Cover Sheet Words These words are tricky because the final syllable is the unaccented, or quiet syllable, and the vowel in that quiet syllable makes the schwa sound. You can't sound it out because all of the vowels make this sound. Here's a video that explains it. . Handwriting: We practiced the letter C in cursive. Science We started making our cloud books. 1. When we're comparing things we can measure, and 4. When we're finding the missing part of a whole group. We discussed the fact that numbers will never fall out of the sky and hit you on the head. Instead, math problems always come in a story in one of these situations in real life. When we're doing math problems with just numbers, we're practicing to do them in a story in real life. 5. Spelling/Phonics: Today was our first spelling test and pretest. This took a very long time to get everyone logged in and tested. I'm still not sure everyone took both tests, but we'll figure it out tomorrow. We were interrupted by a fire drill. Technology We worked on our typing and learned the shortcut ctrl W to close tabs. Science We started talking about weather and weather prediction. This is the slideshow I used to teach it. We didn't write our answers in the red boxes. Instead we discussed the answers to the questions. If you're doing this at home though you can either write your answers in the red boxes, on a piece of paper, or discuss them with an adult. We got partway through slide 7. Tomorrow we'll start making our storm spotter's guide. At the end of the lesson we went outside to look at the clouds and see what kinds were out there. There were also several things not in the slideshow. One was a discussion about the Care Bears, how they live on clouds. We watched about 30 seconds of this and talked about why it's impossible because clouds are really just water vapor. If you've been in fog, you've been in a cloud! The poor care bears would have fallen right through the clouds too. There's no way they could have stood on them! Miscellaneous: We also cleaned our desks today! Language Sentences We did a class word sort of several words into categories of nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns We learned about concrete and abstract nouns using this powerpoint. Reading; I introduced the idea of Point of View by reading The Tale of Two Beasts. We talked about the difference between the character's points of view and then asked them to come up with their own point of view. Then we filled out this page. Spelling/Phonics: I passed syllables to each student and had them find another student with a syllable that would fit with theirs to make a word. All of the syllables were closed. Then they did page one of closed syllable practice. We learned how to write q in cursive. Social Studies We added to our discussion of internet safety. We discussed what to do about Cyberbullying. We also watched this quick video. 1. Be kind online and never share mean things. 2. Shut the screen and tell an adult. 3. Know that your friends will know you and know that rumors aren't true. We also talked about using critical thinking, knowing that just because it's online doesn't mean it's true. We used Nearpod to do a fun activity when I showed photos and they got to vote on whether they thought it was real or fake. Here's the link. The code to get in is 2EYAU. Here's a quick key, but kids, DON"T look at this until after you do the activity!: Rock home: fake. . . the rock is real but the door isn't. Cat: real. It's a chimera. The genes from its parents didn't mix, so it looks half like mom and half like dad. Walking on water: Real. The photographer took the photo just as the kid was jumping off the board and was about to fall in. Cute creature: fake. It's a combination of a cat and a bunny and glass eyes. This photo has fooled a lot of people though! Fish: real! This is a catfish. They grow big! Turtles: Fake! Someone took photos of swimming turtles and photoshopped them into a photo of a room. Iceburg: Fake. The idea is real. Iceburgs do get that big, but look at where the light is coming from underwater. It's totally dark under there. Dog: Fake! No dog would let you lift it up with its feet not touching, and it not freaking out. Plus that, 5 balloons wouldn't even pick up a hamster. Long legs: Real! This is a Maned Wolf and it lives in Africa. Owl: Fake! Look carefully and you can see how the face is really speckly. That's a clue that it's been badly photoshopped. Plus that an owl wouldn't be camouflaged if it was brightly colored like this. Train tracks: Real! This happened in an earthquake! Lion: Fake! The lion is a painting stuck on a photo. Now look at their shadows. See how the man's shadow and the lion's shadows are different? Now look at the texture of the building and how it's smooth behind the lion. That's another clue that it's been photoshopped. Trees: Real. Snow fell on these when they were small and they grew this way! 9/7/2023
