Important Information
Class Rights and Responsibilities
1. I have the right to be respected for who I am.
I have the responsibility to respect everyone and their stuff.
2. I have the right to an education at school.
I have the responsibility to follow instructions the first time, do my best, and pay attention.
3. I have the right to make mistakes without being laughed at.
I have the responsibility to try to solve any problems I've caused.
I’ll be giving out “money” worth different dollar amounts for doing great things in class. Every few months we’ll have an auction where students can trade money for fun items like toys, school supplies and classroom privileges! Consequences for not following the rules will depend on the situation.

Grading Guidelines
Homework
How Assignments are Turned in and Graded
Papers are usually graded and entered into the gradebook the day they're returned. We all correct our own work together. I go through each problem with them so they understand where they made their mistakes and they mark their own papers. Then they line up and meet with me individually as I check their scores. Assignment scores will not count toward the final grade, but I will look at each of them to see how they did.
Redos
I believe in redos! If the score on an assignment was low, I keep it so I get another chance to reteach the concept and they get another chance to try again. A few days later, I'll pull out the redos during workshop and we'll look at it again, fix the misunderstandings, and recorrect their paper.
Quizzes
Quizzes will be given shortly after I've taught each concept on the State Core. These go in the gradebook and make up your child's grade. There are questions varying in difficulty from 1-4. If your child scores lower than a 3 after doing all of the practice, I will reteach them the skill during workshop so they get some additional practice. Then they get a chance to retake the quiz. A missing quiz is a 0 until it's done. If your child has scored lower than a 3 and has not done the practice work related to the quiz, I will not give them the opportunity to retake the quiz until they've watched the lesson and done the missing practice work.
- Math homework is due the day after it goes home. If it isn't done, they will need to work on it during workshop time before we correct it. I will not be able to help them with it because I will be working with students in small groups.
- Spelling goes home on Wednesdays and is due the next Tuesday.
- A reading log/response journal will go home with spelling on Wednesdays and come back on Tuesdays.
- On some nights every few weeks I'll substitute reading comprehension homework for math homework.

CONTACT MS GROVER
Communication between family and school is vital and I ask you to please text, email or call if something comes up that I should know about.
1. I'm going to be using Class Dojo to text families this year as well as email. I hear great things about it! Please sign up and download the app. The sign-up information is in the red folder you'll receive at back to school night. I'm happy to answer texts as well as emails. Usually I see texts before emails, though I don't often check during school hours and I do take time off at home.
2. My email is [email protected] I check it every day, though usually don’t get a chance to respond till after school. I would also like to be able to email you rather than send home paper notes, as I find that information gets to parents more quickly if it’s delivered electronically. If you will email me your name and your child's name before August 16th, I’ll add your email to my class mailing list and you and your child will earn an early bird prize the first day of school! :)
3. If you need to get information to your child during the day, just put a call in to the school and they'll buzz down to the classroom.

what to do if you're absent: how to make up missing work and Print Homework
Most importantly: don't be absent unless you're sick! When kids miss school they miss important instruction that's hard to make up. When they come back from extended absences, they don't understand what we're doing, because they missed the lessons leading up to the current lesson. Plan vacations, doctor appointments, and other preventable absences when there isn't school. If you must miss school for a non-sick absence, you are responsible for catching your child up to where we are.
Math
Missed homework will not be counted on the final grade, but the homework assignments do help your child learn the concepts that will be quizzed. I am willing to rip out pages of the math book and send them home. If you didn't ask for the pages to be ripped out here's how to access the math workbook from home:
1. Look at the "What We Learned Today" page to see what lessons you're missing.
2. Go to the Clever and log in. The username is the student number and students know their password.
3. Find i-ready.
4. This link has great instructions on how to use the bookshelf from home. Print off the lesson from the workbook and watch the video if there is one that goes with the lesson.
*Homework assignments don't have to be made up. They don't count toward the final grade. The tricky part is that those assignments help to learn the concepts that are on the quizzes that do count for the final grade. If they get less than a 3 on a quiz, I won't let them retake it unless they have watched a lesson and done the homework assignment first, because there's no point in having them retaking a quiz unless they've learned the concept first.
Language Arts
1. Read for 20 minutes.
2. Do your spelling.
3. Check the website to see what we learned that day. If it's a Wonders assignment, you'll need to wait till you get back to school. Most ELA assignments will need to be done after they get back.
Missed work will not be counted on the final grade, but assignments do help your child learn the concepts that will be quizzed. I will save pages that your child misses on their desk. I'll often post a video that teaches the concept, but if your child needs more, you'll need to look up videos of teachers teaching those lessons. There are many of them. Grades will be made up of quizzes for each standard on the language arts core. If your child misses a quiz they will need to take it when they get back to school, but won't be able to retake a quiz until they've practiced the skill by doing the assignment first.

Parent volunteers
We LOVE our volunteers and will put you to work!
Class Tutoring: This is probably the volunteer position that makes the most difference in the education of the kids in our class. Usually when you arrive you'll pick up a set of cards with questions and answers on them. You'll work with one child at a time for 2- 5 minutes in the hallway right outside of the classroom. This could be language arts or math, depending on which skills we need the most work at the time.
Click on the button below to sign up on our Class Tutoring schedule. You can look at the schedule by day or by month. Sign-up Genius will email you a reminder the day before you come, and email me to let me know you're coming. :)

Copy Maker: This involves coming in on Monday mornings to make copies. This isn't a very glamorous job, but is truly the most helpful! It saves me hours of prep work. If there are more than one volunteer for this spot we can alternate. Thanks in advance for all of your help doing this job! This gives me time to better plan and teach! :)
Book Medic: Assist in repairing damaged books in our classroom library. This can be done either at school or at home
Project Assistant: Cutting, stapling, making copies or teaching materials. This can either be done at home or at school. I'll send out an email when there's a project coming up with which I need help. If you'd like to volunteer, just let me know. I'll send it home in a big envelope if it's possible, or you can come to school!
Party Goer: Come help during our Halloween or Valentine class parties. This happens once a year at school.
Field Trip Chaperone: This means leaving little ones at home, encouraging children to stay with the class, and possibly being responsible for a small group.
birthdays
We love birthdays in 3rd grade! On your birthday feel free to send a treat that's easy for kids to pass out, purchased from the store with your child for everyone to share as they walk out the door. We'll celebrate summer birthdays the last few weeks of school. We will sing to them and tell you all of the great things about you on flipgrid. Only bring invitations to parties if you are inviting everyone in the class to your party.
class wish list
- monetary donations to our class funds (used toward hands-on materials and supplies throughout the year)
- paper towels
- packages of paper plates
- packages of napkins
Items to Bring to School
Please send these things to school:
1 backpack
- A normal-sized pencil box that closes well: Make sure it isn’t too full because we don’t want it exploding in your desk. Inside your pencil box please have:
- 24 pack of crayons
- a few pencils,
- a ball point pen
- an eraser
- a pencil sharpener with a plastic case attached.
- A pair of earbuds, not earphones
- a pack of 12 markers (optional)
- a box of colored pencils (optional)
- a container of Clorox Wipes
- One water bottle! (very important)
- Two composition books, preferably that look different from each other. These need to be the kind that are sewn together and don’t have papers that are easily ripped out (not prescored).
- Two flat, 2-pocket portfolio folders, preferably the vinyl kind (I’ll laminate it the first week of school if it’s the cardboard kind)
If you are unable to provide these items, please let me know and they will be provided for you.
Things NOT to Bring to School
- Binders
- Paper
- Spiral Bound Notebooks
- Toys
Check your child's Grades
Parent Portal: Check grades here! You can even set it to email you if there is missing work or if grades drop below a certain value.
