We didn't finish this today. We'll need to finish tomorrow. Before we left we talked about the fact that we're not reading these books to make us sad at all, we're reading them to make us excited that our constitution gives us the right to have freedom of speech, and that we live in a democracy that allows us to change things that we don't think are fair. It makes us appreciate people who were brave enough to stand up and change things so that now we can have rights that we might not have had otherwise. It also makes us want to be upstanders for our friends when we see someone being treated unfairly. 1/11/2023

Grammar:
Practice with online dictionary and thesaurus Review and Practice Grammar weekly quiz Music Special Social Studies: Celebrate the end of our culture unit, and sample some Ethiopian food! :) Review the meaning of rights, discuss the rights our constitution and bill of rights gave us, including the right of free speech and the right to vote Discuss the fact that though it was the most rights any country had at the time of the founding fathers, not all people had equal rights in the USA, including: black people, immigrants, workers, women, children, and ethnic minorities, so some people were upstanders and used the rights our founding fathers gave us to change the laws. This is possible because we live in a democracy. We call this the Civil Rights Movement. Monday is Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, and this is why we have the day off of school, to honor the difference he and other Civil Rights leaders made. Read the book: A Picture Book of Martin Luther King Jr. Discuss how we can be upstanders too, when we see something we think is unfair we can stand with the person being bullied and work to change things in a peaceful way. 1/10/2023
