Today did NOT go at all as planned!
MATH 1. We started today with Wednesday's portion of morning work in math. Math We also corrected and turned in our homework. ELA Grammar: We did language and sentence structure morning work. Language Sentences Reading: We finished our DAZE testing by having the students log on to Amplify. This took a very long time as the site wasn't available through Clever and we had to look up our usernames and passwords. We got in some silent reading during this time! Bruce Cameron the author came and spoke to us in an assembly! To prep for his visit we listened to the first two chapters of his book, "Ellie's Story." Spelling: We took a spelling pretest on Powerspelling. We also learned about closed syllables. We went over their spelling packets and I handed them out at the end of the day. We're working on the closed syllables a and i. Here's a link to the Cover sheet and the words. Typing: We continued working on our typing skills. Technology We also celebrated a birthday by singing, sharing a treat, and making a flipgrid!

Math Workshop:1. We started today with Monday's portion of morning work in math, ELA, and sentence structure. Language Math Sentences 2. We learned how to check books out of our class library using the library sticks. 3. We started the I-ready Diagnostic test. This test will determine what they know right now, and will assign lessons on their level. Math Lesson 1. We learned about how to read big numbers using the story of the 3 bears and the bear houses. This video is a little different from my story, but is almost the same. 2. We made our own bear houses to put in our math notebooks and practiced making and reading big numbers with partners. Only print the last page of this file. Write the digits 1-9 in the blank squares. Cut them out, mix them up and practice reading the big numbers. PE ELA We made reading response journals. This took much longer than I thought it would. If you were absent I made one for you. :) Science I read The Fantastic Elastic Brain to them. We discussed how we learn, about amygdalas and brain synapses. Social Studies I read Thank You Mr. Falker. We discussed what it feels like to struggle when you're learning, how it's awful when people laugh, and how we can help each other learn. They loved the surprised at the end where the author of that amazing book was actually writing about herself. We talked about how all of our brains learn differently, and how sometimes the brain synapses connect in different ways, or take longer to connect, or connect easily in some ways but not in others. We all agreed that just because it might take longer to learn doesn't mean that person is dumb at all! 8/17/2023

Math: Place Value
We put all of our unifix cubes into groups of 10's. We had more than 9 so we put those into flats of 10 10s in the 100's place. They stretched all the way across the classroom. We put ten of those into a cube of 10 100's. That was 1,000. Finally we wrote the number 3 different ways. We drew a picture, we wrote it in expanded notation, and we wrote the digits in each place. Reading: Narrative Story Structure We learned about Character, Setting, Problem, and Solution. We applied it to different stories. We then read The Bear, The Beaver, and The Bee, from Wonders, and applied it to that. Folk Tales We acted out how folk tales were passed on from generation to generation. Then we learned about the different types: Fairy Tales, Myths, Tall Tales, Legends, and Fables. Technology: We logged on to Google Classroom and Ms. Grover's website. We also deleted all of our bookmarks and learned how to get to websites in 3rd grade. Science: We learned how to feed Ziggy, and when it's OK to pet him. Social Studies: We read a book called The Araboolies and talked about how being different and unique is great. We like having people around us who are different! It's usually bullies who pick on people who are different. We tied this into the Skittles experiment yesterday. 8/16/2023

First day of school and the new 3rd graders were amazing!
They learned how to: line up in order walk through the hallways hang up their backpacks go to lunch get on their Chromebooks line up after recess We also: * established class rights and responsibilities by having them tell me what makes a good learner *Assigned group and class jobs *Made wallets and earned class money by paying attention and following instructions *Read, "My Mouth is a Volcano," and talked about what to do instead of blurting out and interrupting *Read, "Ways to Be Smart," and discussed how each of us has different ways of being smart *Discussed what it's like to have everything exactly the same, and tried it with the same colored skittles. We then applied it to people and how it's good to have people that are all different in class. |
The Plan. . .My plan is to list what we did each day and the homework for each night on this page. That way you can just click on the date to see the day's entry. I will do my very best to update this daily! Archives
