I updated the website yesterday but realized today that I typed over last Thursday's post. To make up for this error, I'm posting both yesterday and today together in one.
Math Small Groups: 1. We did x-tra math. Go to Clever and log in with your student ID [email protected] . The password is the same password you use at school. X-tra math is on your teacher page. 2. We did i-ready for 15 minutes.. Go to Clever and log in with your student ID [email protected] . The password is the same password you use at school. 3. We reviewed what we've learned so far in math with A.M. work. Main Lesson Monday we got out the scales and learned to use them. We weighed things using grams. There's no math homework tonight. Tuesday we learned how to measure in kilograms. We used digital scales. A kilogram is 1000 grams. We played a game where everyone got to select something in the classroom to measure. Whoever selected the object that weighed closest to 1 kg won! It was Johnny who chose the bag of Dot's pretzels. We then ate them so we could say we ate a kg of pretzels. Math homework is the last page of lesson 29 session 2. ELA Phonics: We reviewed and then took a spelling test. Comprehension and Fluency: Monday we finished performing our Reader's Theater scripts about Native Americans. We also reviewed the different types of folk tales. We read The Ant and the Grasshopper (pp 49-50) and found the lesson in the story. We highlighted where we found the answers. Tuesday we read The Boy Who Cried Wolf (pp 51-52). We answered questions about the story and found the lesson. We highlighted where we found the answers. We also previewed the story we will be reading this week for 6 minute solution. Grammar and Writing: We practiced our grammar in morning work. We practiced building sentences. We also worked on typing. We started learning about formal and informal language. Science We are learning about forests. Tuesday we acted out a model of a food chain called, "Oh Deer." In this game, some kids are the deer, and some kids are the resources, which are part of the environment. This is impossible to play when you aren't in a big group, so I found a video of a group of kids who played this game. Here's the video. In our game we introduced predators too, who were able to catch the deer. That brought the population of deer down, so there weren't as many. It kept the deer more healthy because they weren't starving to death because they ran out of food or water, and they helped the environment because there weren't as many deer eating the food, so there were more plants. They also ate the slowest deer, so the faster ones were left. In the real forest, that helps the stronger deer survive longer to reproduce. Wednesday we watched a video about the Native Americans who lived in the Eastern Woodlands. 3/22/2024

Main Lesson Today we corrected our homework from last night and worked on solving story problems with liters. ELA Here's our spelling packet for this week: Words cover Comprehension and Writing: We finished a Venn Diagram comparing Wildlife of the Mojave and Little Half Chick. We wrote two things they had in common, and two things unique to each story. Then we wrote a paragraph comparing both stories that used those facts. Grammar: We took our weekly grammar review quiz, went over all of the questions, corrected it and turned it in. We also worked on typing. Science We watched a Kratt's Kreature's episode about the traits of different types of bears and how their traits help them survive in their environments while we had our bank. Other We had an auction. 3/21/2024

We reviewed what we've learned so far in math with A.M. work. Main Lesson Today we finished taking our math test. We also learned about liters. We tried pouring a liter of water into a whole bunch of containers. We guessed before pouring if the container was bigger than a liter, smaller than a liter, or exactly a liter. We only had three containers that were exactly one liter. Homework is the last two pages of lesson 28.2. This link has great instructions on how to use the bookshelf from home. ELA Phonics: We learned about making comparative and superlative adjectives and adverbs.
cover Comprehension and Fluency: Today we read Reader's Theater scripts about Native Americans Grammar and Writing: We practiced our grammar in morning work. We also worked on typing. Science We are learning about forests. 1. Watch this Bill Nye video about forests. While you're watching, write down 5 things you learned about forests that you didn't know before. 2. Print this page. Color the deciduous forest areas light green. Those are the trees with leaves that change color and fall off in winter. Color the taiga areas dark green. Those are the trees with needles and pine cones. Color the rain forest areas yellow. These are forests that are dark and warm, with lots of tropical animals and plants. 3/13/2024

We reviewed what we've learned so far in math with A.M. work. Main Lesson Today we corrected and turned in last night's homework. We also learned how to find elapsed time, this time the starting time. This lesson is lesson 27, session 4. Here are the steps we used. 1. Add up the minutes that make the elapsed time. 2. Make a time bank. 3. Either use a timeline or a clock. 4. Decide what direction we're jumping. . . backwards or forwards. This depends on the story. 5. Decided how many minutes to jump for the first jump. DON'T jump over the hour. Try to jump right on it. 6. Subtract those minutes from the time bank. 7. Write down the new time after the jump. 7. Repeat steps 5-7 until you're out of minutes in the time bank. This is the time we're looking for. . Homework is the last two pages of the lesson. This link has great instructions on how to use the bookshelf from home. ELA Phonics: We reviewed vowel teams. We started r controlled vowels. Here's the spelling packet for the week: We're working on the er, ir, and ur spellings. We talked about the r controlling the vowels when it's behind them. The r doesn't make the rrrr sound when it's in front, or when it's alone. It makes a r- sound instead. (Hard to show with text!) Spelling packets went home today. Cover Words Comprehension and Fluency: Today we read Reader's Theater scripts about Native Americans Grammar and Writing: We practiced our grammar in morning work. We also worked on typing. Science Today we discussed how every trait an animal or plant has, either physical or behavioral helps it survive in its environment. It either 1. Helps it find food 2. Helps it reproduce (make more of itself) by attracting a mate and starting a family 3. Helps it protect itself 4. Helps it live through harsh weather I used a slideshow to show pictures. The kids in class didn't use the slideshow but if you weren't here I'm going to have you use it because it will be easier for you. Go to Google Classroom and it will be in your Science folder. It's called Traits and Survival. Get a piece of paper and fold it into fourths. When you watch the meerkats, buffalo, ravens, and snow monkeys, write down what you notice. In addition to the slides, we also talked about how flowers need bees to reproduce. They have traits that try to attract bees, like bright colors, sweet smells, nectar, and more. The more successful they are at attracting bees, the more pollen the bees will get on them, and then they'll take it to other flowers, and then they're able to make seeds. Without the bees and other bugs and birds moving their pollen around they can't make more plants, which would be a big problem. Animals do other things to attract a mate. Ziggy does pushups to show he's healthy and strong. Birds do amazing dances! Male rams actually head butt each other to compete and see who is the toughest, all so they can pass on the healthiest and strongest traits to the next generation. Imagine if they passed on the weaker traits what a difference that would make to the next group of Big horn sheep to grow up. Would they be as big and strong? Maybe not. That behavior trait worked. It helped them survive, which kept them alive long enough to have a family, which passed that trait on. If it DIDN'T work, the animal or plant wouldn't survive long enough to have a family, and then they wouldn't be able to pass it on. That trait would eventually die out, like the light colored moths we read about. 3/7/2024

We went on a field trip today to the Hutchings Museum!!
When we came back we wrote about it. Then we got started on an art project. We didn't finish it, so will finish it in the morning. 3/6/2024

It's been tricky updating the website today because of prepping for the field trip, so I'll just update the science.
Today we were able to complete the model for our Rock pocket mice.
